Finding the Right Barcode Depends on Your Location
Barcodes are an essential part of running any business that sells physical products. Whether you’re managing a small local store or expanding markets, barcodes are an indispensable technology. They keep track of your inventory, speed up checkout, and ensure products are correctly labeled for shipping and retail. But not all barcodes are the same. It is important to understand the differences between the two most common types—UPC (Universal Product Code) and EAN (European Article Number).
For small business owners, choosing the right barcode system can have a big impact on where and how you sell your products. UPC codes are widely used in the U.S. and Canada, while EAN codes are the standard in Europe and other international markets. If you don’t use the right one, you might face challenges with retailers or shipping your products overseas.
What is a UPC Code?
A UPC code is a 12-digit barcode that is mainly used in the United States and Canada. It was first introduced in the 1970s by George Laurer to help stores manage their products more efficiently. The UPC code is made up of two parts: one part identifies the manufacturer of the product, and the other part identifies the specific product itself.
You’ll find UPC codes on just about every item sold in North American stores, from groceries to electronics. These codes make it easy for stores to scan products at checkout, manage stock levels, and track inventory. If your business operates in North America, UPC codes are likely what you’ll need for your products.
What is an EAN Code?
An EAN code, or European Article Number, is similar to a UPC code, but it has 13 digits instead of 12. This extra digit is used to show the country where the code was issued. EAN codes are the global standard outside of North America, especially in Europe, Asia, and other regions.
Just like UPC codes, EAN codes have two parts: the manufacturer code and the product number. However, the inclusion of a country code makes EANs better suited for businesses that sell products internationally. If you’re planning to sell your products in Europe or other global markets, you’ll need to use EAN codes.
How to Choose the Right Barcode
Choosing between a UPC and an EAN code depends on where your business operates and where you plan to sell your products. If your business is based in the U.S. or Canada and you primarily sell to North American customers, a UPC code is the best choice. On the other hand, if you want to sell internationally, especially in Europe or Asia, you’ll need to use an EAN code to ensure your products are accepted by global retailers.
To get UPC or EAN codes, you’ll need to register with GS1, the organization responsible for global barcode standards. GS1 will assign your company a unique prefix, which you’ll use to create barcodes for each of your products.
